Whether you’re getting back to yoga after a long break or just finding your way to the mat for the first time, this blog is for you.

At the end of every class, before our last Om and mats are rolled up, I ask my students to do one thing. Thank themselves for showing up.
Not for how well they moved, or how deep they got into a pose. Just for being there, in spite of everything pulling at them in different directions. It might sound like a small thing, showing up. But after years of teaching, I can tell you, it’s not at all.
Why Getting to the Yoga Mat Is Harder Than It Looks
There are a million and one reasons not to come to class.
The laundry. The inbox. The meeting that ran late. The kids, the dog, the dinner that still needs to be made. Life is full and relentless, and it does not automatically pause so you can have time for yourself. And so you put it off. “When things slow down, I will make time for myself.” Or “Maybe tomorrow I’ll go to yoga.”
But later has a way of becoming never. Have you noticed? What happens instead is that you begin to accept compromise as your normal. To brush your needs aside so often that you stop valuing them as a necessity.
You forget what it felt like to choose yourself — to choose joy.
At Move2Joy, our goal is to help you remember.
What You’re Really Trading When You Skip the Mat
When we skip self-care, we tell ourselves it’s practical. We’re doing what we have to do. Taking one for the team. Putting ourselves last.
But every time we make that exchange, we’re not just trading a yoga class. We’re trading the version of ourselves that moves through the world feeling a little more grounded. A little more spacious. A little more like us.
You are Not Behind, You Just Forgot
I’ve seen students come back after weeks, months, or even years away and say, “I forgot how good this feels.” It’s obvious that they have been traveling down the “I am everything to everyone but myself” lane — and gleefully have turned themselves around.
Hey, I get it. Life is loud. Really loud. The quiet moments are overshadowed by the banging and clanging that is constantly around us.
Showing Up Doesn’t Have to Look Perfect
Regardless of how long you’ve been away, please know this: you don’t have to be ready.
You just have to arrive.
No need to be flexible, fit, or even sure why you came. You can show up tired. Rusty. Uncoordinated. Messy. Hey, you can show up in your PJs for all we care. This is the magic of yoga — all you have to do is believe that you are worth it. And to choose what matters. You.
The Practice of Thanking Yourself
And that is where the thank you comes in. If you’re like me, you’re very good at noticing what you don’t do. The class you missed. The week you fell off track. We notice our misses and overlook our successes.
Thanking yourself is a practice — just like the poses, just like the breathing. It’s training your attention toward what is true: you showed up. And that — that deserves applause.
You’re Welcome Here — Wherever You’re Starting From
Whether you’re returning after a long break or stepping onto a mat for the very first time — you are welcome exactly as you are.
At Move2Joy, every student is welcomed, supported, and embraced to feel at home. Choosing yourself, even once, even imperfectly, is always worth celebrating.
And we’d love to celebrate with you.
Life happens. Yoga helps.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it okay to restart yoga after a long break? Absolutely. There is no “too long.” Your body and mind will meet you exactly where you are, and we will too.
Start Where You Are Try our Gentle Yoga classes, Sunday Easy Flow, or Form & Flow — all levels welcome. Give yourself permission to ease back in without judgment. Learn about our classes.
How do I motivate myself to do yoga regularly? How we feel is the strongest motivator we have. Focus on that. The feeling you carry out of class — that’s what brings you back. Even one class a week is a practice worth honoring. And the science backs it up. Harvard Health confirms that yoga elevates mood, reduces anxiety, and even strengthens brain function.
What if I’m too out of shape to go back to yoga? Yoga is not a fitness test. It meets you where you are, not where you think you should be. Every body is a yoga body.
